Are you tired of hunting through clutter each day for what you want to wear? If so, here’s a simple, effective closet organization system you can implement in no time flat.
This is a perfect solution for you if you’ve grown sick of a disorganized closet that makes you depressed at the mere sight of it the first thing in the morning.
Just think how much better it would be if you finally took steps to renovate your closet.
You could fit more clothes and accessories in your closet, you’d be able to find what you’re looking for easier and your clothes would be kept in better condition over the years.
And a beautiful organized closet just makes you feel good.
Imagine…
You wake up each morning to a well-organized closet that invites you to pick out the clothes that make you feel like a million bucks. It’s quick and easy because you can see exactly where everything is at a glance.
Keep reading and you’ll learn the secrets of getting a well-organized closet in seven simple steps.

Step 1 – Measure Your Closet Space
Get out your tape measure and measure the width of each wall and the height from floor to ceiling.
Then you can map out the space on a piece of grid-lined paper. That will help you get a vision for exactly what you want to do and what kind of supplies you’ll need for your closet organization system.
Having that space drawn out on the grid lined paper, and done to scale, will help you know what will fit and what won’t. And that could save you a lot of time and frustration in the long run.
If you want to make the process of creating a new closet space easy, there are pre-made kits that you can adapt to different sized areas. You can also find drawers, racks and other things to store shoes and accessories to fit into your closet space. See below for some ideas. Jump link to section below
Now is the time to go through steps 2 – 5 to start thinking the process through in more detail and deciding what organizational products you’ll need. Then buy them before you do step 6.
Step 2 – Declutter
Now you need to go through everything that is in your closet and get rid of all the things you no longer want or need.
Ask yourself…
- Does it still fit?
- Is it in good shape?
- Do you still wear it?
If you haven’t worn something in the last year, or so, consider donating it and get it out of your closet.
This is the step where you simplify your wardrobe.
Step 3 – Group Like Items Together
Now that you’ve gone through all that was in your closet, and gotten rid of the things you no longer want, then think through grouping all like items together.
First there are the obvious things like dresses, shoes, shirts and pants. Then you’ll want to think about how you want to group the accessories and other items like bath towels and/or other non-clothing items you may want to keep in your closet.
At this point you’ll be able to see how much space you’ll need for each type of grouping, and you’ll also be able to think through how you want to store everything in your closet.
Step 4 – Decide How You Want To Store Clothes With Your Closet Organization System
For some clothing you’ll want to put them on hangers and others you may want to fold and put on shelves.
Things like accessories and underwear are often a good choice to store in drawers or baskets.
Following is a summary of options you’ll have.
- Hang things up (blouses, dresses, pants and shirts).
- Fold and put things on shelves (pants, shirts, towels).
- Hang accessories from racks on a wall, or maybe in an organizer on the back of a closet door (scarves, ties, belts, hats, shoes).
- Store things in drawers and baskets (underwear and various accessories)
Step 5 – Plan The Space For Your Closet Organization System
Now comes the fun part… deciding how you want your new closet to look and feel.
When looking over your plan that you’ve mapped out on paper, see how you can use the space in a way that conforms to your greatest needs.
Do you have a small closet that requires the most efficient use of the available space?
If so, think about using space saving organization products. One of my favorites is the Wonder Hanger (see below) that allows me to hang five garments from one hanger. I have them in all my closets and they work great.
If you have a good sized walk-in closet you can think about adding drawers, racks on the walls and additional shelving.
This is a good time to look over the organization materials and supplies below in the “Resources” section for ideas and inspiration.
Step 6 – Prepare Your Closet For Transformation
At this point you should have all of the organizational products in hand and any tools you may need to install them.
Now you just remove everything from your closet and give it a good cleaning.
If the walls aren’t in great shape you may want to repair any damage and give the walls a fresh coat of paint.
Step 7 – Put It All Together
Now you should have a clean, bare space as your canvas to paint your dream closet masterpiece.
Bring in any new storage items like shelving or racks and put them in place. You may need to affix some hardware to a wall as you go.
Now you can bring your clothes back and store them as you like.

Then decide how you want to store each of those groupings.
At this point you should look through the resources section for ideas and inspiration about how you want your closet to look, feel and function.
Next you will plan how you want to use your closet space and get it prepared for the transformation.
